SOBER SUNDAYS NOT FOR EVERYONE

By: Itumeleng maleka ,Tsholofelo Sebola and Pelane Mabula

As the draft Gauteng Liquor Act currently stands, no sale of liquor on Sundays will be permitted. The government has a strong interest in cutting the sale of alcohol to reduce excessive drinking, road traffic fatalities and damage to consumer’s health.
Rashad Pombo, a pub owner thought that the new Liquor Act would affect his business because he will not be able to pay rent. “This new liquor act is not a good thing, why did they choose Sunday out of all this days.” Said Mr Pombo. Through the following you tube link, Pompo is voicing his view on the proposed act:  http://youtu.be/PeYWXVSLYbY
The Liqour Act strictly regulates taverns and shebeens in townships, mainly because authorities want people to improve their lives and have productive Mondays.
Some of the consumers did not see it that way. One such consumer, Thokozane Nkonsi, did not agree with the proposed new law.
“I do not agree with this law because we want to drink on Sundays and we want to have fun. We can go to church in the morning and after that we can live a little,” he said.
Another tarven owner, Ntate Nkomo also added that shall the proposed act remain standing; it should be applicable to all communities, including those in suburbs. We have his comment in audio through the sound cloud link: http://soundcloud.com/user514224285/liqour-audio

online journalism in south africa

Online journalism in South Africa

Online journalism is the reporting of facts and ground breaking news threw the internet. I’ve conducted research that states how the internet online news differs from the other news sites. Many news organizations based in other media also distribute news online, but the amount they use of the new medium varies. Some news organizations use the Web exclusively or as a secondary outlet for their content.

News 24
News 24 has a lot of videos that depict ground breaking news. Example about the Oscar pistorious saga. You get follow ups and feedback on what is happening. You can also tweet your videos or share them on your blog. There is also weather forecast and job advertisements for the jobless.  People from around the world get to publish their stories and feel like their part of the team. I like the fact that it gives people platform. The following websites show that online journalism is informative but news are conveyed in a different manner.

Mail and guardian
Mail and Guardian online websites focuses on various topics like international and nation African stories and also sports. There is also a bit of entertainment. You can also see what is on the paper on that specific day. Unlike news 24 and the daily maverick doesn’t tell you what’s on the paper where you have to go and buy it. Zapiro is also featured in the website; you can also view his cartoon on: http://mg.co.za/zapiro/

The daily maverick

The daily maverick deals with more political issues local and international. There is also a page where you can advertise what you like which news 24 and the mail and guardian don’t.  There are sections that really don’t work like the lifestyle page. When you click on the page it goes back to the home page.
There is also a subscription page where a person can know the latest news fist thing in the morning.  This site will let you comment on the stories that they post.
In conclusion online journalism is informative but at the same time diffrent.
